Drivers hit course for practice
January 9, 2010

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - After a month of snow, clouds and humidity, Saturday morning broke clear and cold in the Adirondacks making the three-quarter mile track a much quicker shot down Mount Van Hoevenberg as pilots prepared for the Lucas Oil Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge presented by Whelen Engineering.
NASCAR Rookie of the Year Joey Logano recorded the fastest time of the morning practice session when he negotiated the 16 turns in 50.73 seconds.
NHRA's Jeg Coughlin, Jr. posted the second best practice times for his three runs and was clocked at approximately 63.5 miles per hour coming through the speed trap at the exit of curve 14.
Most drivers opted for a fourth run down the course.
Road racer Boris Said, the most dominant driver of the past four years, displayed speed at the start of the runs before finishing in the middle of the pack of 10.
The lone lady in the field, NHRA's Melanie Troxel, took three runs, but failed to finish her second as she dumped her sled in curve five. But the first-timer wasn't alone. Morgan Lucas crashed in two of four heats. NASCAR's George Brunnhoelzl III, another newcomer to the Bodine Challenge, had a roll over on his opening attempt.
Off-road racer Carl Renezeder improved steadily throughout the morning, going from seventh to first place.
Qualifying will take place later this afternoon.
